As a perennial herb, the BaekSun has an overall stimulating taste. The root is thick and lignified with multiple roots growing together. The outer bark of the root has a clear white color. The stem is sturdy and straight with hair on the upper area. It has pinnately compound leaves with an alternate phyllotaxy and a petiole. On the rachis of the plant there is a thin wing. There are 9-11 small leaves with no petioles and the leaves are in egg or oval shape. With a raceme, the flower buds at the top of the stem and the flower is of a rose-pink color and the stamen is of a purplish red. The capsule of the plant has dense clusters of pilus and when it matures it divides into five parts. On the part where the stem connects to the flower there is sap that is dispersed giving the plant a very strong smell.

As a perennial herb, the rhizome of the YongDam is short and thin. It has a cluster of long roots and the roots have a brownish yellow color. The main stem is straight, thick, and strong. There are very few stems that branch off and the stem surface is rough and the length between them is shorter than the leaves. The plant has opposite leaves without a petiole. The upper head of the leaf is sharp while the lower part is round. The leaf has 3 veins and these veins come together at the end of the leaf and enclose the stem. The flower does not have a stem and instead at the end of the stem and at the underarm of the leaves there are clusters of flowers. The flowers have a wine color and the bud is narrow and lanceolate. The capsule of the plant has an oval shape and when it is ripe it separates into two. The seeds are of a wide lanceoloate shape with wings at each side.

Around July-August, the flower turns a light yellowish green and it grows in a polychasium in the underarms of the leaves. The cup and crown of the flower become divided into five parts. The fruit is both follicle and lanceolate.
