Jamu is a general term, referring to traditional Indonesian herbal plants. It includes tens of thousands of plants, and lots of prescriptions considering both health and esthetic aspect are transmitted to these days based on actual experience for thousands of years.
Jamu is the name of traditional Indonesian Medicine. Jamu, which means herb in english, is a general term referring to traditional herbal plants cultivated in Indonesia. It includes tens of thousands of plants, and lots of prescriptions considering both health and esthetic aspect are transmitted to these days based on actual experience for thousands of years. In ancient days of Indonesia, men needed to maintain diligence and strong stamina in order to live a smooth life with numbers of wives in material and sexual aspects, while women needed their own secret to keep their beauty and draw attention from husband among many other wives belong to the same husband. Based on these social background, secretary methods was developed into Jamu through more than a thousand years.
Though Jamu is known to be traditional medicine of Java, it is also found in many other areas of Indonesia. Factories manufacturing herbal medicine are distributed from the center part to eastern area of Java Island. Though there are small and big differences in herbal medicine in use according to ethnic groups or regions, about 200 kinds of medicines are estimated to be used throughout the whole Indonesia. Those who deal with Jamu are not medical doctors or professionals. Though prescriptions and combination methods were passed down, therapeutic concept and theoretical system of their medicine were not. Jamu is utilized to promote the health of Indonesian along with modern medical system.
